Position Overview: The City of Detroit Lakes is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Utility Billing Clerk to join our team. This individual will be responsible for various clerical, customer service, and administrative tasks essential for billing and accounting of public utility services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Balance and process cash receipts, prepare bank deposits, and reconcile manual and automated totals.
- Prepare correspondence, reports, and memoranda ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Manage incoming and outgoing mail, maintain postage equipment, and ensure office supplies are stocked.
- Provide front desk coverage, manage phone inquiries, and assist walk-in customers.
- Setup ACH transactions, handle late/delinquent notices, and assist in resolving billing disputes.
- Accurately record utility payments, balance customer payments, and process credit card transactions.
- Update and maintain utility billing records, monitor consumption irregularities, and coordinate meter reading activities.
- Perform data entry for permits, licenses, and invoices; assist with municipal accounting tasks.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Associate Degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
- Minimum of three years' experience in billing, collections, customer service, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Strong mathematical, bookkeeping, and analytical abilities.
- Effective communication and customer service skills, with the ability to handle challenging interactions professionally.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Physical & Work Environment:
- Primarily office-based with frequent sitting, standing, bending, and keyboarding.
- Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Regular exposure to computer screens and office equipment.
